The technique of soil nailing is a way to reinforce the slope through the insertion of anchors. Is a surface containment system, preferably used in restricted areas thanks to the size of the equipment used.
The anchors work with the traction and can take both bending and cutting loads. It works quickly because it supports the area by inserting bolts as the excavation progresses.
Advantages of soil nailing:
- It is a flexible system that adapts to surface irregularities.
- An affordable method for protecting slopes, when compared to other systems.
- No additional form of reinforcement is required.
- Quickly implemented in parallel with on-going excavation work.
- It is especially effective in urban areas as it avoids interfering with adjacent structures.
It can be complemented by other elements such as concrete, metal mesh or geogrids or Californian drains.
