Anchoring is a support technique that consists of embedding a steel bar inside the rock, which provides tensile strength and, by taking advantage of the rock’s natural strength, provides its own support.
There is a whole variety of anchors available and their differences are determined by:
A) The purpose for which they are intended. (Securing isolated blocks, patching up fissures, slope protection against landslides, excavation support, wall strengthening, etc.
B) The type of material or frame that they are composed of, steel bars between 16 and 50 mm thick and steel from 900 to 1,230 N/mm2, or cables with different configurations and diameters.
They also can be temporary or permanent, passive or active (under tension), anchored by with the help of resins or cement, or by friction.
